A solid wood floor can typically be sanded 4-6 times down to the bare wood during its lifetime, while engineered wood flooring rarely tolerates more than 1-2 full sandings. The decisive factor is not the age of the floor, but how much wood is left above the tongue and groove. The industry guide Gulvfakta from Gulvbranchen under Dansk Industri sets a clear lower limit: engineered floors with a wear layer of 2 mm or less should not be sanded.

Here are the figures you can count on when assessing your own floor.

  • Solid plank or parquet flooring: typically 4-6 full sandings. Junckers specifies 5 sandings for a 14 mm solid parquet floor and 8 sandings for a 22 mm floor (Junckers, accessed August 2026).
  • Engineered wood flooring: typically 1-2 times. Junckers states a maximum of 3 sandings for a wear layer of 3.6 mm.
  • Engineered floors with a wear layer of 2 mm or less: should not be sanded (Gulvfakta, Gulvbranchen under Dansk Industri, last updated 2009).
  • Interval: a lacquered floor, in our experience, lasts about 10 years between two full sandings, while an oiled floor is re-treated approximately every 1-2 years.

How many times can a solid wood floor be sanded?

A solid wood floor can practically be sanded 4-6 times down to the bare wood. The limit is set by how much wood is above the tongue and groove, and when nail heads or dowels start to appear, the floor is at its end. The manufacturer Junckers specifies 5 sandings for a 14 mm solid parquet floor and 8 sandings for a 22 mm floor in its own guide on solid wood versus engineered flooring (accessed August 2026).

The usable thickness above the joints determines the sanding allowance; the full 22 mm board thickness is not all available for sanding. Well-maintained solid floors can therefore last for generations. We often work on old pine floors in Aarhus townhouses that have been sanded two or three times since the 1950s and still have usable wood remaining.

Engineered flooring typically allows fewer full sandings because only its top wear layer is available for sanding. Junckers gives a maximum of 3 sandings for a 3.6 mm wear layer and warns that an overly thin top layer may delaminate. The industry guide Gulvfakta on sanding is even more stringent: engineered floors with a wear layer of 2 mm or less should not be sanded (last updated 2009).

In newer multi-story buildings, including apartments in Aarhus Ø, we almost always encounter engineered wood flooring, while townhouses and villas more often have solid pine or oak parquet. This does not mean that an engineered floor cannot be salvaged. It means that measurements must be taken before the machine is put on the floor, and that the sanding must be light and precise.

How many sandings are left in your floor?

If you have a solid floor of 20-30 mm, there are typically 4-6 full sandings left, and if you have engineered wood flooring with a 3-4 mm wear layer, there are 1-2. The table below compiles manufacturer data from Junckers, the industry guide's lower limit, and our own experience from flooring projects in Aarhus and Sjælland. Use it as a guide, not as a definitive answer: two floors of the same thickness can be in very different conditions, depending on how deep scratches and water damage need to be sanded away.

How often can you sand a floor?

In a normal home, there are typically about 10 years between two full sandings of a lacquered floor. An oiled floor is sanded less often down to the bare wood because it requires re-treatment with oil approximately every 1-2 years and can be spot-repaired locally. The interval is governed by wear, not by the calendar.

This also means that the number of sandings rarely becomes the practical problem: if a solid floor has 4 sandings left and is sanded every 10 years, it will last approximately 40 years. For engineered wood flooring with 1-2 sandings left, the calculation is tighter, and therefore good maintenance pays off significantly more. How to check the wear layer yourself?

You can get a long way with three observations before a professional takes measurements. First, look at the edge of the floor at a doorway, a ventilation grille, or a heating pipe cut-out, as the layer structure can be seen directly there. If you see a thin, lighter strip of wood at the top of a darker core board, it is engineered wood flooring, and that strip is your wear layer.

Second sign: if it has been sanded before, nail heads or wooden dowels are often closer to the surface than on an untouched floor. Third sign: tongue and groove. If the groove is visible at the edge of the floor against the wall, you can assess how much wood is left above it. Gulvfakta suggests two specific measurement methods for professionals: for engineered floors, a core sample is taken, and for solid floors, a thin metal blade is used to measure the tongue and groove joint (Gulvfakta, 2009). A misjudgment here can cost the entire floor.

What does a sanding cost each time?

For standard sanding with a standard finish, illustrative totals at 175 kr per m2 including VAT are 7.875 kr for 45 m2, 11.375 kr for 65 m2 and 14.000 kr for 80 m2. These calculations apply to the standard work only; a light surface refresh or additional repairs require a separate assessment.

When compared to durability, the economics become clear: 14,000 DKK for 80 m2 that lasts about 10 years with lacquer, corresponds to about 1,400 DKK per year or about 17.50 DKK per m2 per year. As long as there are sandings left in the floor, renovation is almost always cheaper than a new floor, and you retain the original wood. Drying times are the same, whether it's the first or fifth sanding: oil requires about 24 hours before light use, lacquer 1-3 days depending on the number of coats. Can you save a sanding by doing it yourself?

Rarely, and the risk increases the fewer sandings the floor has left. A rented belt sander removes wood quickly, and on engineered wood flooring with a 2-3 mm wear layer, there is no margin: if you sand through, the area cannot be repaired, and the floor must be replaced. The last wear layer is therefore the worst place to practice.

What to do when the floor can no longer be sanded?

If the wear layer on an engineered floor is below 2 mm, a full sanding is no longer advisable (Gulvfakta, 2009). But the floor is not necessarily finished. A very light surface sanding or a pure re-treatment can give a worn layer new protection without using up the wood, and an oiled floor can be spot-repaired locally where the wear is worst.
