Sanding and oiling will fix it when the surface is worn, but the construction is still sound. The oil keeps the wood fibres down, so the surface becomes smooth to walk on again.

We wash off the algae and sand the surface smooth. Afterwards, we oil it so the wood absorbs less moisture and the algae have a harder time taking hold.
