Can you sand a wooden floor with underfloor heating?

Yes, you can safely sand a wooden floor with underfloor heating. The heating pipes are located in the subfloor construction beneath the boards, and the sanding machine only removes the top layer of the wear layer. The crucial factor is temperature: turn off the underfloor heating approximately 24 hours before sanding, and only gradually turn it back on once the lacquer or oil has cured.

Can you sand a floor with underfloor heating?

Yes. Underfloor heating is not an obstacle because the heating pipes are located in the subfloor construction beneath the boards, while the sanding machine only works on the top wear layer. The deciding factor is therefore not the pipes, but how much wood remains above the tongue and groove.

Our experience from our own projects is that solid wood floors can withstand 4-6 full sandings during their lifespan. Engineered wood flooring can withstand fewer, as the wear layer is thinner. However, engineered wood flooring is widely used on floors with heating precisely because the constructed board moves less than solid wood when temperature and humidity fluctuate. Why should underfloor heating be turned off before sanding?

The underfloor heating should be turned off because a heated wooden floor is drier and more stressed than a cold one, and because lacquer and oil cure incorrectly on a warm surface. The Floor Industry's Floor Facts (DI) states that most types of floor coverings, with the exception of floor tiles, cannot tolerate a surface temperature exceeding 25-27 degrees, and that the flow temperature must therefore be limited to 30-40 degrees (Floor Facts, DI).

Manufacturers set their own limits within the same range. Junckers states in data sheet Underfloor Heating, General Information E 4.0 that the temperature on the top of the boards must not exceed 27 degrees, and that the flow temperature typically ranges between 35 and 45 degrees. Therefore, always check the instructions for your specific floor before turning the heat back on.

Floor Facts recommends for new floors to test the heating system for at least 2 weeks and turn it off approximately 2 days before the floor is laid. We use the same logic for sanding: a floor that has cooled down to normal room temperature absorbs the oil evenly and does not draw the lacquer quickly into one board and slowly into another.

How long should the underfloor heating be off?

Expect the underfloor heating to be off from a day before sanding until a few days after the final treatment. Oil is typically ready for light use after approximately 1 day, while lacquer requires 1-3 days depending on the number of coats. After that, gradually increase the heat in small increments, not all at once.

A 45 m2 parquet floor with wear confined to the finish may be suitable for a light surface refresh. The condition determines the treatment and quotation. The sanding work may fit within one working day in straightforward cases, but the finish still needs its specified drying and curing time.

If you plan to stay in the residence during the process, in practice, the underfloor heating, not the sanding, determines comfort in winter. We therefore prefer to plan such tasks in the shoulder season. See also how a process looks for floor sanding in an apartment.

Lacquer, oil or lye on floors with underfloor heating?

All three treatments can be used on floors with underfloor heating, but they behave differently. Oil penetrates the wood and can be spot-repaired when a board shifts. Lacquer forms a film on top and, in our experience, typically lasts about 10 years, but must be completely sanded off when worn through.

For floors with heating, we most often recommend oil, because it follows the wood's movements and can be repaired on a single board without the entire room needing to be sanded again. Does underfloor heating cause more gaps and cracks?

Underfloor heating can increase seasonal movement as the wood loses moisture. Gulvfakta uses an average movement of 0.22%, equivalent to 2.2 mm per metre of floor width, for each percentage-point change in the wood's moisture content. The floor's construction and moisture conditions determine the actual movement.

In Floor Facts' own example calculation, the floor is laid with a moisture content of approx. 8 percent, while the most humid period - late summer, when the air can reach 65 percent relative humidity - results in a moisture content in the wood of 12-13 percent (Floor Facts, DI). The same source mentions avoiding underfloor heating as one way to reduce gaps, so if you choose heating, slightly larger gaps are part of the package.

During sanding, we fill the gaps and cracks that need to be closed with filler mixed with sanding dust from your own floor, so the colour matches. Very wide gaps on a floor that moves a lot are intentionally left open, because filler in a movable gap will break out again anyway.

What does floor sanding with underfloor heating cost?

Underfloor heating does not in itself add a surcharge to the standard floor sanding rate. At 175 kr per m2 including VAT, illustrative totals for standard sanding with a standard finish are 7.875 kr for 45 m2, 11.375 kr for 65 m2 and 14.000 kr for 80 m2. How do you care for the floor afterwards?

A newly sanded floor with underfloor heating needs to rest for the first week and then undergo regular, dry cleaning. A lacquered floor, in our experience, lasts approximately 10 years before needing new sanding, while an oiled floor needs re-treatment approximately every 1-2 years - a little more often in the hallway and under the dining table than in the bedroom.

We perform the actual sanding with vacuum-equipped machines. The Danish Working Environment Authority considers wood dust from both softwood and hardwood to be carcinogenic, and if the extracted air is returned to the room, it must pass through a vacuum cleaner in dust class H according to DS/EN 60335-2-69 (Danish Working Environment Authority). This is one reason why a professional process generates less dust than a rented machine.
